MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF DEPARTMENT
Communication is at the center of human existence. It is, thus, imperative that human interactions and their activities are driven by communication both verbal and non-verbal. Indeed, verbal communication is vital in driving both the international and the local economy. The same applies to interpersonal relationships amongst the world populace. Further, in the twenty-first century, employers have put more emphasis on eloquence and the ability to use language competently. It is in light of this backdrop that the Department of Linguistics and Languages is positioning itself strategically to address language-related competencies of the future.
The department provides language services to the other schools in the university even as she continues to offer her unique courses. Besides teaching, the department plays a critical role in serving the language needs of Machakos University and the world at large through consultancy services. We offer the Bachelor of Arts (BA) program as well as a wide range of postgraduate degree programs in languages and literature.
The department has competent faculty dedicated to mentoring and equipping graduates with twenty-first-century skills that enable them to compete favorably in the global world of careers. The department also prepares researchers to address emerging linguistic challenges of global communities. Currently, the department is offering postgraduate degrees in the following areas; PhD in Applied Linguistics, PhD in African Literature, Master of Arts (Applied Linguistics), Master of Arts (Kiswahili), and Master of Arts (Literature).
